Photo: Todd Kirkland/Getty ImagesATLANTA—Heading into this week’s conference championship matchups, the College Football Playoff Selection Committee looked like it could take the weekend off. The top four teams in the nation—Georgia, Michigan, Washington and Florida State—were all Power 5 schools with perfect records. Win one more game, and the final four would pick itself. Then Nick Saban’s Alabama marched into Atlanta and plunged the entire sport into chaos.

Carson Beck and Jalen Milroe had to replace big-name quarterbacks at programs with national title-or-bust expectations. His turning point may have come in the SEC opener against South Carolina, when Beck rallied Georgia from a 14-3 halftime deficit to win 24-14. And Milroe has done something even Young couldn't do last season: lead the Tide to the SEC title game. Then Milroe was back, leading the Tide to a perfect SEC season and making their biggest play in the Iron Bowl. Besides the similarities of replacing star passers, Beck and Milroe share another common ground.

Alabama's national championship hopes came down to fourth-and-31 with a loss and some less dramatic close calls along the way. 1 and had a much less treacherous path to the Southeastern Conference Championship Game meeting of powerhouses Saturday in Atlanta despite some key injuries. It has certainly been the case for this team, which hasn't had the seemingly smooth path as some of his six Alabama national championship teams. It's the third time Saban and Smart have met in the SEC Championship Game, with Saban winning the first two. But on their last meeting, Georgia rallied for a 33-18 victory in the national championship game in January 2022.

The back door to the College Football playoff is unlikely to be open for Ohio State or anybody else this championship weekend. And the Crimson Tide stayed in CFP contention as they prepare for the Southeastern Conference championship game against No. 20 Iowa in the Big Ten championship game away from a third straight playoff appearance. In the final season before playoff expansion to 12 teams, cutting the field to four might be tricky. ... Don't be surprised if most teams with openings are not willing to wait another week for coaches involved in conference championship games.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — The hype is coming for the Texas Longhorns like it hasn’t in years. That's what happens when you knock off Alabama on the road and get your first win over a top-five team in 15 years. “Game over with,” Longhorns receiver Xavier Worthy said, after it had been over with for an hour or so. In essence, Texas bullied an Alabama team that’s been doing that to opponents throughout coach Nick Saban’s tenure. “I think there’s a lot of people out there that based on the games we’ve had in the past or the seasons we’ve had in the past, some people try not to believe the hype,” Brooks said.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. This amounted to a welcome-to-the-Southeastern Conference moment for a program set to join Alabama & Co. next season. Alabama had its 21-game home winning streak snapped along with a 57-game regular-season binge against nonconference teams dating to Nick Saban's debut season, 2007. Alabama's Jalen Milroe delivered big plays passing and running, but also was picked off twice on bad decisions.
